[edit]I find these things fascinating, and I hope someone with expert knowledge does some more work on this article. How about some photos? What about timespans? Oldest stalagmite? Largest stalagmite? User:Palefire
I wonder if Stalagmite should redirect to stalactite, seeing as they are formed by the same process, and this article seems to mostly consist of explaining the difference between the two. Sfnhltb 07:30, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
Is it really encyclopaedia content to have a list of mnemonics? --5telios 10:05, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
The list of mnemonics were unnecessary and frankly embarrassing. Hence I removed it. Truetyper (talk) 23:40, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Stalagmites in my freezer
[edit]Is it known to have these in your ice cubes at home? Just check these out...

Wow I've never seen ice cubes do that before. I would imagine you had some sort of re-freezing going on in there. Most likely a series of humid days.
Questions
[edit]How long would a stalagmite several feet long take to form? What about a soda straw of a similar length? 89.240.202.53 21:39, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Should not be touched?
[edit]About this line: "Stalagmites should normally not be touched..."
I understand that cavers would prefer Stalagmites to NOT be touched, but does that mean it's a fact that Stalagmites should not be touched? Kinda like saying "You should not pollute the ocean" in an article about the ocean. It might be true, but not factual. 159.33.175.12 (talk) 23:27, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
Lavacicles Vs. Stalagmites: article inconsistency
[edit]The section on stalagmite formations in lava tubes suggests that lavacicles can be stalagmites, whereas the lavacicle article seems to restrict lavacicles to stalactites. Which is correct?
Philip.coleman (talk) 08:13, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- I've reworded that bit to say that stalagmites do form associated with some lavacicles - I've seen such myself, but the word lavacicle is derived from icicle so they only hang down. Mikenorton (talk) 11:08, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
Limestone bias
[edit]It appears that this article only specifically states that stalagmites are limestone formations only which is strictly false. While there already is a lavacicle article, it notes the lavacicle term is generic. I have sources that could add to the lavacicle article, even noting the origination of the term, as well as broadening the stalactite/stalagmite articles to be inclusive of non-limestone formations.
I may recommend that the lavacicle article be migrated to inclusions in both the stalactite/stalagmite articles on lava formations, since lavacicles are both stalactites and stalagmites and obviously generic in description. Perhaps this article should differentiate between primary formations (those in lava) and secondary formations (those in limestone, etc.) Leitmotiv (talk) 03:06, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
Calcium Carbonate
[edit]Calcium Carbonate has a chemical symbol of CaCO3, this is part of the process which includes acid rain, which can from a cavern and lead to the formation of stalactites and stalagmites. ---- — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.181.129.234 (talk) 16:04, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
