[edit]The Netherlands becomes the first european power with a republican form of government.
- 1) It depends what you mean by republican 2) ancient Greece?
Ancient Greece was a democracy.A Republic before only existed in Ancient Rome. It wasn't called Europe back then because it was inhabited by the Gauls and other tribes. We get the word Europe from Europa, lover of Zeus;which indicates that the word was first used by the Greco-Roman cultered.
- I think the key word is "power" - but even then this is silly. Venice was a European power in the 16th century, and a republic. Also, the Dutch Republic had existed since 1581, it was just formally recognized by Spain in 1648. Total silliness. john k 01:52, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
John Blow appears to be born in 1649. Andres 21:40, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)
