- 1865 – The Brockville and Ottawa Railway begins operations between Arnprior and Sand Point, Ontario, a distance of about 6 miles (10 km).
- 1891 – New York Central Railroad stages the record breaking run of the Empire State Express (1905 train pictured) between New York City and Buffalo, New York; the train makes the 436-mile (702 km) journey in just 7 hours 6 minutes, an average speed of nearly 65 miles per hour (105 km/h).
- 1915 – The funeral train for William Cornelius Van Horne departs Windsor Station in Montreal at 11:00 AM bound for Joliet, Illinois; the train is pulled by CP 4-6-2 number 2213.
- 1996 – The York-Durham Heritage Railway begins operations on CN's former branch between Uxbridge and Stouffville, Ontario.
