The job is not defined
[edit]"This article needs additional citations" and I doubt that you will find many. The job of the "best boy" depends on what the director needs. As the article already says, he may be responsible for the "hiring, scheduling, and management of crew" and he may also be responsible for finding electrical outlets so that the lights can be operated, or fixing scenery so that the actors don't trip on an irregularity in the floor. He's both an administrator and a problem-solver. He or she is not responsible for making a TV show or a movie, but it wouldn't be made without him or her. The article is correct as it stands, but there are probably few or no citations to be found.
To add to that, the term "best boy" might come 1) from English public schools where the headmaster or dean would choose one of the students to do anything that was needed, from lighting cigarettes to being a teacher's assistant, or 2) from the captain's apprentice aboard a ship. There are more opinions here.
