Marceline is a city in Chariton and Linn counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 2,123 at the 2020 census.[5]
History
[edit]In 1887, the Chicago, Santa Fe, and California Railway, began construction on a rail line between Kansas City, KS and Chicago, Il. This line ran through southeast Linn County, and as part of the line's construction towns were established along the route. Marceline was one such town. After the line was constructed it was absorbed into the Aitchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. The first plot of land in what became the town was sold in January 1888, and two months later the town was incorporated. By the end of the year, the town also saw the construction of a locomotive roundhouse and yard.[6]
In March 1903, the Aitchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway divided the line between Chicago and Kansas City into two districts, with Marceline serving as the Missouri district headquarters.[7]
The town was named after Marcelina, the wife of a railroad man.[8] A post office called Marceline has operated since 1887.[9] Marceline is most famous for being the boyhood home of Walt Disney, and the original Main Street, U.S.A.[10]
