Quizzes for individuals or small teams
[edit]I've added that start times are *often* only approximate rather than (always) approximate. In quizzes that I've run, if the teams get to thinking that 9 p.m. means the questions will start at around 9.15 p.m, then some teams will tend to arrive close to 9.15 p.m. with the result that the questions can't get started until around 9.30 p.m. Thus the quiz start time gets progressively later and later, week after week. My tip is to start at the advertized time; if teams arrive late, you can *quickly* run through Round 1 questions for them between Round 1 and Round 2. This usually encourages them not to be late again! Peter Harriman 06:20, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Quiz Leagues
[edit]I'd like to add some text on the pub quiz league formats which can vary. Our league's format is very different.
This is all when I get round to it! Peter Hitchmough 07:32, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Links
[edit]Does anyone have any opinions on the link farm that's steadily growing at the bottom of this article? Varitek 08:20, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
- If you're asking, dump the commercial sites. They don't provide ANY further understanding of pub quizzes, they're just there to shill on Wikipedia's back. Be bold and hack whatever doesn't work. --MattShepherd 15:11, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
Not sure why some of the links were taken off or why it was assumed they were all commercial sites. They weren't. One was a listing of quizzes in the UK which is not run for profit and has no advertising or commercial content. Not sure either why two in particular were left untouched... -- Frank, 6 August 2006.
Here are the links that were originally present :
- http://www.quiz-express.com quiz-express.com - long established suppliers of pub quizzes nationwide with quiz night directory
- Website says that they sell pub quizzes.
- http://www.123quiz.net 123quiz - lists British pubs that provide quizzes
- Upon further review, I probably goofed on this one, appears to be nonprofit site.
- http://www.pubquizhelp.34sp.com pubquizhelp - background knowledge for pub quiz enthusiasts
- Looked okay to me, still does.
- www.brainstormer.com Brainstormer - 'Home of Pub Quiz Trivia' in the U.S.
- Website of a US pub quiz business.
- http://www.pubtriviaquiz.com Pub Trivia Quiz - the ultimate way to manage a quiz night
- Company that sells pub quizzes and runs them for fees.
- http://www.findaquiz.com Findaquiz.com - An online directory to find a quiz night anywhere in the world
- As mentioned on the website, this is associated with www.pubtriviaquiz.com, commercial site.
I removed what I thought were commercial. Of course, if you disagree with me, put them back, and we can have a discussion to reach consensus. However, please remember, Wikipedia is not a place for free advertising. -- ArglebargleIV 15:14, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
I removed the apparent add for brainstormer.com again. I'm not going to 3RR, or even come close, but it probably should be discussed why some people think the commercial site belongs here.. -- ArglebargleIV 02:50, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
I restored the link to another non-profit site. - Frank, 7 August.
quiz-express.comUK has crept back into the links, I see. I think the decision to include only non-commercial sites is fine but it seems to be a constant battle. Frank, 23 August.
I don’t know if it’ll be allowed, or if interest, but I run a couple of quizzes in Essex, and have a blog describing both them, along with a few basics about how I’ve been running them, for the past few years. It’s at http://niknaksoldpeculiarblog.blogspot.com/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cudy2977 (talk • contribs) 14:09, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
- http://QuizNight.net (pub quizzes in the Seattle area) was added to external links. The site does carry ads in hopes of recouping a fraction of the web hosting costs, but it is not a business. - Erik, 22 March 2009 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.113.73.248 (talk) 21:39, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
- This is for a small local area only. Nothing less than a national webvsite would be considered for this page, and then it would have to include relevant content and add to the average users understanding of the topic. Even if it is not a business, it is still just an ad. DerbyCountyinNZ 22:35, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Bingo Quiz
[edit]I added this section to describe a form of Pub Quiz which is popular in the UK.Chrisj1948 14:02, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
I am a little unhappy about the external link to Pub Quiz USA added by user 24.21.18.50. This appears to be the website of a commercial quiz organiser. The same user also modified the Bingo Quiz section to add details of the format used by Pub Quiz USA. Anyone else have an opinion about this? Chrisj1948 (talk) 10:13, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
Since there has been no comment, and the Pub Quiz USA site does appear to be commercial. I have removed references to it. Chrisj1948 (talk) 11:20, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
On 12th January 2012 user McGeddon removed the section on Bingo Quizzes (amongst other edits). I would be curious to know his justification for this. It does not appear to be vandalism. Chrisj1948 (talk) 11:01, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
Excellent first sentence!
[edit]Just thought I'd mention it - very funny! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.21.85.174 (talk) 20:12, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
- If you meant about pub quizzes peaking in the 1990s - I have removed the reference as there is no evidence for this Nektario (talk) 14:17, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
- The sentence last March was "A pub quiz is a quiz held in a pub.", which has since been changed to "public house", and could probably use a bit more clarification. --McGeddon (talk) 14:32, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Barry
[edit]Should there be a mention of Barry, the trivia machines in pubs that you can win money on? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.0.223.243 (talk) 04:45, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Poorly written, uncited and not very encyclopaedic
[edit]This article is poorly written and has a bias to the UK (it was amazingly a featured article). I have added an Australian section, removed some uncited and potential contentious claims and have provided some citations. Much of what is written is not very encyclopaedic. Ozdaren (talk) 08:47, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
- I am not too happy about the bunch of 'citations' which you inserted. That many were for charitable concerns still does not make them appropriate, and they had the character of commercial external links rather than source material relevant to the article. Chrisj1948 (talk) 11:04, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
- Agreed. 1. "Unsubstantiated claims" should not be removed without discussion, they should have a [citation needed] tag added. 2. Quiz nights not help in a pub are technically not pub quizzes. 3. There is no need for a separate section on Australia when the activities included also happen in other countries. 4. There is no need to add "in the United Kingdom" to "little evidence of them existing before 1970" unless there were puib quizzes elsewhere before that time. 5. Links to independant reports of fund-raising and charity quizzes are preferable to the links directly to those charities etc. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 11:31, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
- The original article on Quiz Nights was redirected here. The web pages that I linked to were for past events. The truly commercial one I removed the http start of the URL so it couldn't be linked to unless some one wanted to, in any case it provided a citation for the information. The addition of 'in the United Kingdom' is perfectly correct for the external web link. The information about Pub Quizzes is about the UK. Ozdaren (talk) 12:44, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
- PS Apologies for potentially offending you with these changes. I hope I have not inadvertently created tension. Ozdaren (talk) 12:47, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

The Digital Pub Quiz
[edit]I've removed this recently added section because a can't find a decent citation for it, and it was also somewhat unencyclopedic and POV/promotional.
If someone has a citation (note that the Facebook page is not good enough) the entry could be added as follows:
- In a digital pub quiz wireless handsets replace the more usual pen and paper. A time limit can be set on responses (e.g. 60 seconds). It is also possible to determine which team answers a question first for spot prizes, tiebreaks etc. The first digital pub quiz was held at the Woodlands Hotel in Blackburn, Lancashire on the 29 July, 2010.
Cheers, DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 20:49, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Hi DerbyCountyinNZ There is a citation here on the Woodlands Hotel Website. http://woodlandsblackburn.co.uk/thebar#pubquiz Thanks for suggesting more appropriate wording - I have never written for a encyclopedia before but now understand more about how things should be written. Let me know if this citation is acceptable. Many Thanks MatLambert (Talk 00:54, 4 January 2011 (GMT)

HACKED [refs]
[edit]- Driven by Burns and Porter Associates—creators of “The Pub Quiz Book”—the goal of the quiz was to attract people to pubs on quieter, “off” nights.[15] [17]

- Here, a time limit is introduced and if the team under questioning fails to answer, any team may “pounce” and offer the answer.[16]
