it strikes me greatly, how eerily similar thomas kretschmann (the guy who played hosenfeld in the pianist) looks to the real hosenfeld.

i genuinely feel sorry for him for what must have come upon him at the very end. i wanted to look at his diary ...i figured the links which lead to this all end in german websites...does anyone know of websites featuring english translations of his diary?

Do we have any verifiable sources for this entry? Considering the major source is his diary some other, more verifiable/impartial sources, would be extremely valuable.

Look at the source again: it is his diary, as _compiled_ by someone else. In other words, the editor's comments are a reliable sources. Other sources are among the web links at the bottom of the page and also include Szpilman's book as well as the German Wikipedia article.

Honoring Fallen Men

I am in the process of collecting infromation on this heroic, and couragous man. I have to say it was a horrible end to his life. But never a waste. No one can say enough about men or women who give their life in a war. It is alltogether fitting and proper that we should honor him, but never can we do enough.

I beg your pardon: What “pro”-Hosenfeld bias?

On 17 September, 2007, Abram Schlimper made the following additions/changes to the article, purporting to be giving the article balance by removing overly “pro”-Hosenfeld bias. I have read a fair amount about Hosenfeld and have yet to see anything that hints that Mr. Schlimper’s changes are warranted; since he did not cite and sources for them, I have removed them.

• For his part in the murder of thousands of Soviet POWs Hosenfeld has been convicted of war crimes.

What part in the murder of POWs? Please provide details and sources for this; if none are available, it does not belong in the article. See WP:ATT

• “He was sentenced to 25 years at hard labor for alleged war crimes simply on account of his unit affiliation. Despite the many who filed petitions on his behalf, the Soviets refused to believe that he had not been involved in war crimes. He died in Soviet captivity on August 13, 1952, shortly before 10:00 in the evening, from rupture of the thoracic aorta” changed to “He was sentenced to 25 years of hard labor for war crimes he committed in his capacity as a member of POW camp administration. He died while serving his term on August 13, 1952, shortly before 10:00 in the evening, from rupture of the thoracic aorta.”

What POW camp administration was he a part of, and what war crimes did he commit as a member of it? Early in the war (1939), Hosenfeld was involved for a short while in a camp for Polish POWs, but I have read nothing so far to indicate that he was involved, directly or indirectly, with any war crimes in that capacity. If you have evidence for such activity, please provide it in the form of scholarly citations.

• “[Szpilman's son, Andrzej Szpilman, has long called for Yad Vashem to honor Wilm Hosenfeld as a Righteous Among the Nations, non-Jews who risked their lives to rescue Jews.] Along with him, the Szpilman family and thousands of others are asking that Hosenfeld be recognized in this way for his acts of kindness throughout the war” changed to “Yad Vashem so far declined to recognize him because of his war crimes record.”

Recognization As Righteous

The inclusion of this page in the category: German Righteous Among the Nations may not be entirely appropriate as, by 1 January 2008 his name is not included in Yad Vashem's posted list of German Righteous (http://www1.yadvashem.org/righteous_new/PDF%20Virtual_Wall_Of_Honor/GERMANY.pdf). Main Wikipedia picture

Hi, I would like to see a red and white swastika on Wilm Hosenfeld’s arm in his main wikipedia picture. I think adding a swastika would better represent who he was, and it would disgrace his role in history. A red and white swastika would accurately identify him as a member of the Nazi party. We should not disguise the nazi contribution to history (killing 6 million Jewish people, and millions of others) by omitting their associated ideology. This would benefit our society given its emerging neo-nazi white supremacist climate.

Western Front Service?

Bio says he served on the Western Front and became a prisoner of war. He was captured by the Soviets however and was stationed in Poland. Should this be changed to say Eastern Front? Bluegill1999 (talk) 19:30, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
